Turkey in the EU

Reader comment on item: Is Turkey in Europe?

Submitted by Jeffrey Sheff (United States), Jul 4, 2013 at 17:05

Although I agree with Dr. Pipes that today, the Turkish government has turned away from the West and toward the Islamic world, this does not mean that, during former, and hopefully, future governments, it could not become a valuable member of the EU (especially after the demise of NATO.)

Europe lost a great opportunity in the previous century to accept Turkey with open arms and strengthen the pro-Western and secular populace there. It could have eventually led to a union which would have accepted Lebanon and Israel as full partners. The geographical accident which places most of Turkey outside the European continent has nothing to do with its fitness or lack of same, to be accepted into the EU.

I disagree with the blame-Europe approach for Turkey's turn away. See http://www.danielpipes.org/blog/2010/06/who-lost-turkey
