Living outside the US during formative childhood years has shaped his view of the world. He is what is known as a "third culture" kid, whose affinities very often exclude the passport country of parents. Many of these American third culture kids absorb the anti-American attitudes of their childhood playmates. America, as the "great Satan" would have been part of his experience in Indonesia.
