A general opinion for Turkish leaders

Reader comment on item: Turkey's Islamist Turn, 10 Years Later

In my opinion and from what i have understood from AKP's actions is that their goals for domination are higher than people think. Kemalists in Turkey who are as well nationalists have been defeated greatly and is very difficult to come back, AKP is also nationalists but they are Ottoman nationalists. Islam is playing a much bigger role in Turkish politics than it used to be 10years ago and that is clear, but AKP wants to use Islam so to gain power over the Islamic world, AKP's policy is based on a combination of Islam and Pan-Turkism.

They present themselves as protectors of all Islamists, they have gained the favour of America presenting the Turkish Islamic democracy as an example for the Islamic countries and they have done this by giving continuously support to NATO and doing the dirty work of NATO, also they have gained political influence in the US by a lot of different organisations who support politicians financially, but also with the growth of their military power and the attraction of American investments in Turkey. The Americans have been convinced about this new Ottoman model and that is clear, because Erdogan very smartly threatens actually America that there is a danger that Turkey can become like Iran and then the Middle East will be lost for America and other powers might gain influence in Turkey like Russia and China.

In the end though there are some specific goals that they are trying to achieve, first keep a strong Iran and if possible Nuclear, gain power and control over the Islamic governments of the Arab Spring and of the Balkan countries, weaken Israel, Greece and Cyprus and last but not least become a nuclear power.

The question though is why would anyone create such a monster, i honestly believe that the American government has really underestimated this possibility and really overestimates Iran. In the end if Turkey acquires such power why would they still work for the American interets? I mean that right now the Americans say it is better to have the Demon on our side and not against us, but it is only a matter of time until the demon works for it's own interest.

Historically, a similar mistake was done by Byzantium, which actually gave the power to the Ottomans to destroy it.

As for Islam and Democracy, Islam is not compatible with Democracy, because Islam is already a political system, capitalism might be compatible with Islam, but not Democracy and in general i believe that the Turkish goal is to create some specific touristic destinations on the Aegean coast and of course Istanbul and then keep the rest of the country separate under absolute Islamic authoritarian control.

In the case of minorities and freedom of speech, nothing has changed and basically everything has become worst, the small Christian, Greek and Armenian minorities still remaining, are considered as third class citizens and Alevites and Kurds are considered as second class citizens fought for their beliefs to death!
