Arab Spring or Arab Mobs?

Reader comment on item: Egypt's Military Holds onto Power

Submitted by Michael Greengard (Israel), Aug 11, 2011 at 03:57

I regard the assumption of power by the Egyptian military as the best available alternative. The so-called liberals in Egypt don't amount to a hill of beans. It's the military or the Islamists, and the military are very much a preferred option. What does the Tahrir square have to say about the rampant violence (e.g. the public gang rape of the Western reporter, opposed by virtually no one in Egypt) and anti-Semitism exhibited by the protesters? Nothing. There is nothing new about the so-called Arab spring, whether in Algeria, Egypt, Syria, or elsewhere. There are only Arab mobs, which have always been a major factor in Arab politics. They are certainly no sign of any turn towards democracy.
