Obama just made one mistake

Reader comment on item: Obama's Failed Middle East Speech

Submitted by Rajiv (United States), May 20, 2011 at 03:30

Dear Dr. Pipes:

As you yourself acknowledged, president Obama's speech on May 19th 2011 carried "elements of common sense and even eloquence". His exhortation to Israel to act boldly to advance peace was not all that bad either.

There was hardly anything wrong with President Obama's speech except one -- like so many other people President Obama did not realize that Islamists do not follow the commonly accepted standards of ethics and morality when they are in conflict with non-Islamic civilizations. Perhaps they are not even obligated to follow these standards.

Millions of people around the world who are completely unrelated to each other -- Hindus from India, Jews from entire middle east, Copts from Egypt, Buddists from western China, Russians from Russia, and New Yorkers whose kiths and kins died on 9/11 -- will testify that Islamic standards of interaction with non-muslims are selfish, brutal, and hypocritical.

In this light, President's request for peace might indeed appear to be a folly but it is the only resort. Force and violence will only work on those who have fear. In their current mindsets a large number of Islamists have no fear. That is why they kill hundreds of their own brothers and sisters in suicide attacks. But luckily in this age of instant communication, as President Obama said, no truth will remain hiddden for too long including the truth that Islamist doctrine is pure hypocrisy as far as muslims interaction with non-muslims is concerned. As this truth becomes more and more apparent, muslims societies will change because they will realize that defending hypocrisy is more expensive than discarding it.
