Reader comment on item: Obama's Failed Middle East Speech

Submitted by Harry Bauskin (Canada), May 19, 2011 at 23:41

Absolutely correct Daniel. A failed speech, but definitely does not constitute a departure from longstanding US policy. Israel, (or more correctly Ehud Barak) even agreed to all of this at Camp David, only to be rejected by Arafat and The Palestinians. Its time to call a spade a spade. The Palestinians have had many opportunities for a state, all rejected by them. They are not interested in the two state solution. To them it might only be a means to an end. This speech and this policy is dead in the water, as Hamas has no intention of recognising Israel, and no Israeli leader in his right mind would give an inch of land after the withdrawal from Gaza and Lebanon led to less security for Israel. And now, with the so-called arab spring turning into a winter of discontent......Are you kidding me? The rest is like all previous policy statements by US Presidents....lip service to the masses, a lilttle bit of Hollywood, some schmaltz and 'something for everyone' election rhetoric.
