Dear Dr Pipes:

Your reader jan criticized many US actions. His opposition to the wars that the USA is involved in the middle east has merit but US involvement in these wars does not explain the turmoil in Islamic societies. While jan must have been typing his/her letter or when I must have been reading it, in a mosque in Pakistan some Muslims were killing 19 other Muslims. Why does this happen? Why no one speaks against it? Why doesn't jan speak against it?

I suspect that giving the authority to protect God's will to an individual -- to any individual -- is what leads to disorder that is so rampant in the Islamic world. What Islamic world needs is not so much that USA vacates the so called "Islamic lands" but that Islamic governments provide reasonable forums for dialog to every one who is feuding. Once this is done, other things will take care of themselves.
