in response to reader comment: Freedom of expression in Koran burning

Your sentiments echo mine. You say we should stand up for our rights. So do I. But how, then are we to do it? I think the way is to burn Qurans coast to coast. But more than that, I think we need to make a symbolic statement to the effect that symbols are just symbols and bot to be made into idols. Along with the Qurans I think Christians should burn Bibles, Mormons should burn Books of Mormon, patriots should burn the flag or the constitution or both, and so on. In this way we could make our statement without special prejudice.

By burning the symbols we would show our understanding of what is holy and what is not. While the thoughts expressed in the holy books, or the constitution, may be "holy", may be to be revered, the books and papers themselves are mere objects and not "holy" in and of themselves. Our flag, for instance, symbolizes freedom and liberty, and we in this country are free and at liberty to burn it without fear of any law protecting the symbol from destruction, which is the perfect proof of the truth behind the symbol. So let us now extend that sound logic to the symbols of "holiness" generally. Such acts, far from repudiating the value, or holiness of the symbols would, I feel, endorse and strengthen those symbols and demonstrate our liberties as a free people. How about the 4th of July?
