And so, once again, the USA must risk an entire generation , bankrupt itself, create great strains with its allies, and risk war with both Russia and China?

We learned to live with a nuclear Soviet Union and a nuclear China--and China got its nuclear start under Mao Zedong, who was every bit as insane as Ahmadinejad (the blatherings of Andre Malraux, Gunnar Myrdal, and a host of others about Mao's being "progressive" notwithstanding).

No, I think it is much more important to craft a foreign policy that recognizes that history is going to happen, especially in parts of the world that want it to happen to them.
