The real purpose of the war in Iraq is to let governments that support terrorists know the price of providing harbor to those who would kill American citizens. Because terrorist organizations seek cover behind the innocent, it is almost impossible to efficiently retaliate and attack their capababilities. But if it can be proved, to our satisfaction, that some government has assisted organizations that promote and execute the random killing of American citizens, then it is our prerogative to take action against that government.
That doesn't mean we always will. We pick our time and place to take the action we deem necessary.
It is unfortunate if our European neighbors disagree with our tactics. But the price of their goodwill (3000 dead last time) is too high.
