leaker's motive?

Reader comment on item: A Military Strike on Iran's Nuclear Infrastructure?

If there is such an arrangement, wasn't it likely that disclosing it would embarrass the Saudi Arabian government? What, then, I wonder, was the motive of the "U.S. defense source" for placing the leak? Was he trying to throw a monkey wrench into the works that would cause the Saudis to disavow the report and back out of any such commitment? If so, was he acting on instructions from the White House? Or was the intention to make the Iranians fear that a military option is still viable, after all?
