What kind of Jewish state ?

Reader comment on item: Accepting Israel as the Jewish State[: Public Opinion in Four Arab Countries]

Submitted by Debanjan Banerjee (India), May 11, 2010 at 08:32

Dr. Pipes,

"Islam defines [your state]; under the right circumstances, would you accept a Jewish State of Israel?"

1. Can you kindly explain what constitues the "right circumstances" for a Jewish state ?

2. Just last week you wrote an article in that for peace in the middle east , the best option is an "Israeli victory". Now you are saying that only the Muslim recognization of Israel as a Jewish state , would bring peace. Are these two points not contradictory in itself ? Kindly tell me.

3. Another point here. What about how Israelis want to view themselves ? Since Israelis as a people themselves are divided upon the question about how to define the term "Jewish state" so kindly let me know what do you think about this proposition ?

Daniel Pipes replies:

1. I left that vague so those surveyed could decide on their own.

2. No contradiction. An Israel victory means acceptance of the Jewish state of Israel.

3. The Jewish state is not some abstraction but actually exists today. The enemies of Israel need to reconcile themselves to its existence.
