Divisions Represented by the Wall are Still There

Reader comment on item: Berlin Wall Fell, Obama Stays Away

Submitted by M. Tovey (United States), Nov 10, 2009 at 17:33

Let those of us who remember that the wall was a symbol of the divisive tensions that were a fallout of international relations after the Soviets became the recipients of the technology used by the United States to end the Second World War-namely a nuclear capability. The shadow that the former Soviet regime cast over Europe was formidable in its intensity and its proclivity to utilize agents of influence in the Western spheres for their purposes, of which there were many who were resident in the United States. For them, the loss of the symbol of the wall was injury after the insult of the loss of their greatest source of political energy, the collapse of the Soviet controlled government of Russia and its satellites.

We can expend little in the way of imagination then to wonder why any who have a leftist tendency might wish to ignore the single most significant political assault on the Marxist/communist icon represented in the former barrier (the Iron Curtain, if one so disposes) between the leftist ideologies of the former Soviet regime and the pro-democratic sensibilities of a Europe now redefined by a free Germany and other states free of the Soviet domination that had them in political subjugation.

Think about who the American Administration has in the inner circles and the wondering can cease, for if the American Executive had decided to go, who would have wanted to go with him? Anyone?
