my cold feet

i have been talking to someone from jordan for a few years and i may go visit them but some times i am feeling cold feet. he told me we can get married there, but at embassy, i check online they say no, only marry in religous married, and sharia court over sees the marriage. i found this out tooday. i am upset. why he tell me we can marry at embassy? maybe i dont understand him, i think he said married first in jordan and then go to embassy. can some one helped me with this? I am american citizen, how do I marry man in jordan, can he come to usa to visit me if i dont want to go there? i am confusing
