Virtually all religions have had a violent birth and that includeds Bhuddism which was founded by some of the most warlike clans of the Tibetans. The error lies in judging a religion of today by its actions in its beginnings. The Islam of today is not the Islam of yesterday. The same holds true for both Christianity and Judaism. Our problem lies in the fact that we have a bunch of anachronists who want to take us back to the seventeenth century and to an Islam that never existed.
