Reader comment on item: Glamorous Muslim Political Women

Submitted by George (United States), Aug 9, 2009 at 22:08

Dear Dr Pipes:

Three things come to my mind in reference to you photolog of glamorous muslim women (the third one is the most optimistic; the other two are sad possibilities).

First, as some one else pointed out these women may not be arab/orthodox muslims. Rich and powerful Muslim men tend to go out of their religion to marry (albeit the hypocrisy).

Second, it can be argued that religion is a thing invented by the rich to keep the poor good and subdued. These are rich women who do not have to follow the customes, rules and mores.

Finally, a silent revolt might indeed be brewing among Muslim women. During a trip to a muslim country last year, I could not but notice that the prettiest women either wore fitted designer burqas/hijab or wore none at all. Once again the more powerful you are, the fewer rules you have to follow.
