Dr. Pipes is completely mistaken about one aspect of Obama's policy

Dr. Pipes comments that President Obama's pressure on Israel has led to a hardening of the Palestinian negotiating position.

I don't think it is possible for the Palestinians to harden their positions any further than they already have.

And that is the real problem with this entire absurd situation. There is nothing short of national suicide that Israel can ever offer the Palestinians that will be acceptable to them. Every American administration has invested and wasted months of diplomatic time and effort trying every pressure and trick in the book on the Israelis only to find out that the Palestinians immutable position is to only accept the destruction of Israel as a peace settlement.

Obama, Emmanuel, Axelrod, and their Peace Now buddies are in for a similar rude awakening too!
