Thank you very much for your information! I am glad I came across this site because this is exactly the type of information I am looking for. It seems like you hit the nail on the head - my friend is from a small village in the West Bank and is minimally educated. If you live in Luxor, you might even know him - or know of him - and all of the tourists he 'works' on.

I'm glad you posted more information about the Orfi marriage because I kind of viewed it as a joke and considered entering into one for my stay. BUT now I can see the very serious legal implications. Hmm...all I can do now is ask my friend if he is a tour guide to figure out his intentions. He knows I am still in school so the chances of him getting any money are non-existent right now.

Do women ever get kidnapped and held for ransom though?! (AaAaah!) Who knows - he probably plans on working me over for another year or so. Shmoozing women seems like a full-time job! You almost have to admire their perseverance...just not at my expense.
