Reader comment on item: Assessing Binyamin Netanyahu's Speech at Bar-Ilan University

Submitted by Nira (United States), Jun 14, 2009 at 19:31

Since the one major condition stated by Netanyahu for Israel's acceptance of a "Palestinian" state is the "Palestinians" and their leaders must publicly declare that they recognize Israel as a Jewish state ....it was not really necessary to elaborate at this time any of the specific conditions that you would have liked to hear in his speech.

He knows, you know....we all know that the Arabs will never publicly recognize Israel as the homeland of the Jewish people and as a JEWISH state. They will also not accept the other conditions he mentioned of "Palestinian" demilitarization, an undivided Jerusalem under Israeli sovereignty, and that the refugee problem will have to be settled outside of Israel. He also mentioned that the "Palestinians" will have to take back Gaza because Israel will not sit down with Hamas. ALL these conditions have to be met prior to any negotiating which finalizes "Palestinian" statehood. So while he also accepts, as you do, a "Palestinian" state in theory the reality is quite different.

The reaction of Senior PA negotiator Erikat " Netanyahu will have to wait a thousand years before he finds a Palestinian that agrees to his conditions...he unilaterally eliminated the final status subjects of Jerusalem, refugees and security."

So Mr. Pipes did you really think any list of conditions you would have liked to hear matter if the Palestinians and other Arabs will never accept the first condition of recognizing Israel as a Jewish state? I think that Netanyahu knew that as well.
