As a descendant of parents who lived through the horrors of the Japanese occupation in Malaya, I am glad that Japan surrendered when it did. My parents described the especially cruel treatments of the subjugated commonfolks by the Japanese soldiers- rape, beheading, disembowelling, forced feeding with water and then soldiers jumping on the stomachs of "enemies", etc. Years later, the world learned about the horrors of Japanese cruelty in WWII in the rape of Nanjing, China.
