Reader comment on item: Florida for Israel

Submitted by Rebecca Moulds (United States), Feb 23, 2009 at 16:48

Although the United States almost unanimously supports Israel, there is much to be considered in blind support, which can disadvantage both countries. Film maker Paula Weiman-Kelman said: "If you think Israel's perfect and you want it to be perfect, then you don't have a real relationship, and that doesn't do anybody any good." It's best to be realistic about Israel, and why we support it over Arab regimes. The main factor is that Israel is largely a Jewish and non-Islamic democracy squashed in between Arab non-democratic countries.

Another factor is the large Jewish community in the US who support Israel; (however there are many Jews in this country who do not support Israel, nor do they feel the slightest connection to it.) Another factor is the Evangelical support; our country was founded on Judeo-Christian principles, and although there are some so-called Christian organizations or denominations who do not support Israel, there are just as many real Christians who do and understand the importance of Israel, and the importance of maintaining this support for the future. It's a shame that only Florida seems to come out on top for Israeli support---would that other States follow suit!

Israel needs to make a firm stand against terrorism without appeasement. Perhaps the next Israeli cabinet will be stronger on the serious issues that plague Israel, and therefore will garner even more support from the US. However, supporting Israel should never be a political issue, but a life-long commitment, no matter which political party is in power.
