Confusing signals sent by President-intern Obama.

Reader comment on item: Obama, the Middle East and Islam - An Initial Assessment

Submitted by M.D'Souza (United States), Feb 3, 2009 at 17:23

Obama's good old days of "20 or 30 years ago" hearken to the time when he could `freely' travel to Indonesia and Pakistan in the 1980s. How `freely' did he travel?...He had to travel under his Muslim name Barry Soetero, while using an Indonesian passport (Associated Press, Aug.14, 2008).

He had traveled to Karachi in 1981 after leaving Occidental College in LA. It was at the peak of the Afghan war, when the US State Department warned Americans traveling to Pakistan. Obama stayed in the Sindh province for three full weeks. That was after having visited his mother Ann Dunham & his half-sister, Maya Soetoro, in Indonesia.

Obama had visited Pakistan again during the second half of 1980 and stayed in Lahore for a month with his mother, who stayed at the Hilton International Hotel. She was an employee of the Ford Foundation & posted in Gujranwala as a microfinance consultant for an Asian Development Bank micro-credit finance project (1987-92).

These were the 'foreign policy credentials' Obama boasted about: "Foreign policy is the area where I am probably most confident that I know more and understand the world better than Sen. Clinton or Sen.McCain". This was at a fundraiser speech in San Francisco, Apr.5, 2008.

Even with these `foreign policy credentials' under his belt, President-intern Obama seems to be fumbling quite a lot.
