Reader comment on item: Muslim Autonomous Zones in the West?

Submitted by logical thinker (United Kingdom), Jan 19, 2009 at 19:00

it is hard to say whether all the options are mutually exclusive. seeing the current trend, i think first event would be Muslim microstates. If we look at the current immigration pattern, a community stays in closer proximity in a foreign land. China Towns, Asia towns etc. The same applies to muslims. due to availability of halaal food, mosque, familiar cultural and people, they tend to be in closer neighbourhood.

this concentration of a community population lead to creation of micro states wherein people of that community informally start following their values and customs. e.g: Bradford in UK. Caucasian girls have complained of harassment by muslim youth who treat them as 'easy and cheap'. this does not happen to muslim women. So, with not much help from a politically right govt., people r bending their ways. Non-muslim girls try to be fully covered like muslim women.

creation of a micro state may not immediately lead to the area being autonomous. But there seems a tendency in the community to dream of autonomy in some distant future. This could be through democratic means. e.g; where ever muslims are in majority in uk, they elect a muslim as MP of their area. the muslim representative strives by democratic means for more accomodation for muslim values and cultures into british society.

the result of this could be in either of 2 directions
a) majority revolts and there is an awakening of the society. Laws are enacted to correct the errors of past. e.g: recently forced marriage, so common in british muslim community, has been outlawed.
b) people do not realise whats going on there is chaos.
