Yes, Americans could easily travel to Pakistan in the 80's

Today, December 22, 2008, there is a State Department travel advisory on Pakistan (as there is for the West Bank of Israel). That doesn't mean you can't travel to Pakistan. The same was true and 1980 and this fact has grown into the false story of a travel ban.

Fortunately, there just happens to be a newspaper article published in the NY Times in 1981 recounting a trip to Pakistan by an American who said all you had to do was take the train from India and you could get a 30-day tourist visa at the Pakistan border. The account of the trip makes the whole thing quite normal sounding. The link to the times article is http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html?res=9F0DE2DA1338F937A25755C0A967948260&sec=travel&spon=&pagewanted=5

I hope everyone reading this will help me dispel the rumors going around about travel to Pakistan. Whatever your political view and whatever you think about Barack Obama, facts are facts. We should get your facts straight in order to make intelligent decisions.
