Re: World double standardReader comment on item: The aftermath of attack in Gaza Submitted by Dave (United Kingdom), Jul 27, 2002 at 11:13 "I see an incredible double standard today. It's ok for terrorist groups like Hamas to intentionally target woman and children with nail studded bombs ripping bodies apart, yet when Israel targets an evil terrorist it's a war crime?" In some ways this double standard is a strange backhanded compliment to the Israelis. It is premised on the view that they are more civilized and somehow better and thus must be held to higher standards of behaviour. Next time you notice someone employing this double standard, bear in mind the subtext that 'Arabs are more barbarous and cannot be expected to behave any better.' It is one of life's little ironies that the people who think of themselves as most 'anti-racist' and non-discriminatory - are often the most guilty of precisely those sins.
