Sign of JonasReader comment on item: The Problem with Middle East Studies Submitted by Zentrist (United States), Dec 11, 2008 at 22:28 One sign of hope is the ongoing "conversation" between the Vatican and Islam. See www.chiesa. After his truth-telling speech to the world on September 12, 2006, or was it 2005--our Holy Father has bent over backwards to reach out to Islam. His approach is not without realism. He wants to "dialogue" with Islam. However, the Dialogue will not be and "inter-religious dialogue." That would not work, for reasons you know well. Rather, he wants the Dialogue to be cultural: He's looking for common ground in terms of principles that we may have in common, cultural principles, not religious ones. If this does not produce some form of reason on both sides, nothing will. Ever. A violent clash is inevitable, probably with nukes. Note: Opinions expressed in comments are those of the authors alone and not necessarily those of Daniel Pipes. Original writing only, please. Comments are screened and in some cases edited before posting. Reasoned disagreement is welcome but not comments that are scurrilous, off-topic, commercial, disparaging religions, or otherwise inappropriate.
