The quote is "We must be the change we wish to see in the world", and it's correctly attributed to Mahatma Gandhi right on the mural. I suppose we could therefore claim that the mural is overly Hindu, but that does seem silly, and since Obama isn't Muslim, I'm not sure where the problem with the quote lies.
I'll double-check the cross situation when I pass by today. Y'all do realize that the paintings on each column show what you're looking at as you look past the column, right? It's not as though it's some random church they slapped up there for balance; it's the steeple of the Mission Cathedral that's nearby the station.
What about the painting of Melnea Cass and all the African-themed patterns? Does that make the mural too African-American?
Again, I say sometimes a building is just a building. And until someone can offer proof that the mosque or the Islamist Society or the Mission Cathedral or Melnea Cass's estate had ANYTHING to do with the choice of subject, I'm going to continue to believe that the high school kids who painted these murals thought they had a good idea to paint the surroundings and that they thought minarets are kind of cool and decorative. Has anybody actually contacted the T about this?
