While living in China, I noticed that the Uighur also have a kind of bread (nang) that is both boiled and baked and in a tire shape--although the hole doesn't go all the way through. My guess is that the bagel is not specifically Jewish, but a kind of bread shared by many peoples of Central Asia and Eastern Europe.
