It seems that David Kay's work has uncovered the tip of a very frightening iceberg. If U.S. intelligence is really so flawed in one area, it is not a stretch to assume it is in others. Is it any wonder, then, that we are making so many mistakes?
In a strange way, though, it is somewhat a relief, because otherwise one would have to conclude that U.S. policy is often deliberately malicious. That would be unthinkable. Now I'm much more confident that we are too often just incompetent, bumbling, but good-hearted idiots.
True, that's not much comfort, but at least I am sure that we would do the right thing, if only we knew what it was.
I do hope we can get our act together, although from the little American history I know, our foreign policy bunglings seem to be a part of our national character. But it is also in our character to make dramatic changes when they are necessary. I'm confident that we have a good chance for success, especially given the alternative.
I have to agree with what Dr. Pipes has said in the past, namely, that the Campuses need watching. They are the wellsprings of change, and they also seem to be one of the weakest links in the ongoing process of maintaining a healthy nation.
