I would add that the dower was also to blame because a rich man's son can buy 4 brides and a poor man's son must wait until he can afford 1 wife. That leaves around 30% poor, unattached men to press into combat at any given time.

If you were 28 years old and had never had sex, and didn't look to have any prospects of getting any, military service wouldn't seem a bad way to blow off steam.

Rich men keep all the their women covered up and locked up to avoid being a cuckold, and poor men keep them covered up and locked up to avoid their female commodities from being damaged by rape, thereby lowering the selling price. In every religion, the men at the top live like kings and the rest are made to do all the suffering to get into heaven.
