Selective freedom of expression - dangerous propositionReader comment on item: PBS, Recruiting for Islam Submitted by Farman Naqvi (India), Jun 1, 2008 at 23:26 It is strange that at one place in his career as a 'critic & analyst' Pipes defends the right of some people to offensively malign the Prophet through cartoons or other methods, but in this article he fiercely criticises the person who came out with the documentary just to remove doubts from the mind of people. The documentary has not criticised any one, (like the cartoons which were meant to offend & nothing else) how it offended so much that need arose to right such a piece which means only criticism. The cartoons were not a piece of art but were circulated just to create unrest. How far to left, right, up & down the right of freedom of expression be extended, or it has selective application upon offending materials of Europeans and creative materials of 'others'. Note: Opinions expressed in comments are those of the authors alone and not necessarily those of Daniel Pipes. Original writing only, please. Comments are screened and in some cases edited before posting. Reasoned disagreement is welcome but not comments that are scurrilous, off-topic, commercial, disparaging religions, or otherwise inappropriate. For complete regulations, see the "Guidelines for Reader Comments". Daniel Pipes replies: I defend the right to proselytize for Islam, just not with taxpayer money. Comment on this item
