Reader comment on item: Reading Sharon's Mind

Submitted by GRAHAM RAEL-BROOK (United States), Dec 23, 2003 at 10:57

Reading Sharon's Mind is something his enemy neighbors would be well advised to do.

Can any observer doubt that after so much war, terrorism, death, bodily and mental injury, property and infrastructural damage perpetrated by Arab Palestinians and their supporters that there has to come a time when Sharon is justified in determining that Israel does not have a partner in Peace but only a partner in War.

When we think of war we also contemplate a peace that comes at its end. Islamist Terrorism is so similar to 'incurable' cancer it leaves one with no alternative but to cut it out even at the risk of taking with it surrounding and as yet unaffected flesh.

Sharon's ultimatum is the product of his diplomatic experience and does not result from his farmer or warrior background. Both the farmer and the warrior know that when action is needed, immediacy is most effective.

Sharon the diplomat by giving six months notice has seemingly sacrificed his prior experience on the altar of largely tainted World Opinion.
