Sorry, but many would beg to differ.
Modern Islam is heavily based on hadiths, and there is still controversy over which hadiths are authentic. There are even those who believe that hadiths should not be considered part of religious scripture at all ( http://www.free-minds.org/articles/politics/rania.htm ) , and I tend to agree that it borders on personality cult more than religion, especially when people try to ape the prophet and idealize the actions of his followers (Salafists).
Islam, like any other religion serves a social and political purpose, and as long as that purpose changes, it too will change.
