The psychology of denial

You're missing a salient point. Oil. I do not mean to imply that there is an active conspiracy but there seems to be a desire to look the other way for fear of offending mideast oil suppliers. Mix that with the political tendency to equivocate and our societal (western) tendency to accept even the most medieval beliefs (as long as as they aren't of western origin) and we can begin to understand the psychology involved.
