The plight of Father Teresito Soganub in the Philippine city of Marawi is just one of many stories circulating the world today in the light of ever-surging Muslim "rights". This story is particularly poignant because for many years, the Catholic church had a huge presence in the Philippines, except for places like Zamboanga. and other Muslim islands and cities.
Ironically, the Catholic church has its own history of prejudice against non-Catholic Christian churches in the Philippines, in Cebu for instance. I lived in the Philippines in 1980 and traveled up and down the archipelago, often surprised at the Spanish and American influences still evident. Obviously things have changed since then, and the Muslims are gaining power.
In Egypt, the Coptic believers often wear a cross or have a cross tattooed on the inside of the wrist, to separate themselves from Muslims, but in recent years more and more of them are leaving Egypt for Europe or the United States because they feel they are being persecuted. An Egyptian Coptic friend told me that she would prefer to live back in the States to escape the growing Islamic influence in Egypt. There are less than 100 Jews today living in Cairo, although at one time they flourished there, as evident of the several synagogues scattered throughout the city.
There seems to be a recurring theme: where Islam is pushing its agenda, instead of standing up to it, the population either gives in or leaves. May our country never take that road, but stand up against Shari'a and all that radical Islam represents. At present, things may seem benign, but that is the insidious slight-of-hand of Islam, and it's the future that we have to worry about.
