What about a confederation for IraqReader comment on item: The case for 'Iraqification' Submitted by Richard Alpert (United States), Nov 19, 2003 at 09:14 Instead of trying to create a democracy modeled after our own, wouldn't make more sense to encourage a federation of three entities that represented the religious and ethnic differences that so divide Iraq that the idea of one nation is hard to imagine? Each area would develop its own form of quasi-democratic rule and agree to security and economic arrangements to be run by a central authority. The U.S. with its allies would play a trusteeship type role to make sure that Saddam and the Saddam-like Baathists did not gain power. This seems to me a better model than to try to create one nation where there is no historical, social, cultural basis for it.Note: Opinions expressed in comments are those of the authors alone and not necessarily those of Daniel Pipes.
