Do not forget the Cold War

I agree with Professor Pipes: America did not sponsor democracy in Middle East in the past decades. But we have to remember that sponsoring democracy, e.g., in 1979 in Iran could lead to a war with Soviet Union. Therefore it was not only a lacking of trust in democracy that made America prudent: it was the Cold War.
