V Sundaram Review of A.J. Kamra's The Prolonged Partition and its Progroms, Testimonies on Violence against Hindus in East Bengal 1946-64,
"One of the opening shots of the Partition Islamic Drama was the Muslim League's Direct Action Day Campaign of 16th August 1946.
"In an organized manner, Muslims attacked Hindus all over Calcutta City while the Police, under the control of a provincial Muslim League Government, failed to protect the Hindu Victims. Within 72 hours, more than 5,000 people lost their lives, at least 20,000 were seriously injured and 100,000 residents of Calcutta City alone were left homeless. However in a matter of days, the Hindus gathered their wits and retaliated in the manner and measure required, so much so that the final death toll was fairly evenly divided between Muslims and Hindus.
"Right from 15th August 1947, the Muslim League—the ruling Party in Pakistan—set forth and directed their volunteers known as the National Guards to go ahead with terrorizing the Hindus and reduce them to Second Class citizenship. The Muslim League itself was a fascist organization founded upon racial hatred of the Hindus and non-Muslims and their volunteer organization was conducted on the principles and models of the Storm-Troopers of Hitler. On the first flush—first Day—of independence, the Muslims in general in Pakistan began to feel that they were a superior class, a ruling race."
