in response to reader comment: Direct literal Trranslation of Sarkozy's comments from French to English ( free of charge )

Submitted by Charles Weaver (United States), Jan 26, 2008 at 13:24

J. Burke's translation of Sarkozy's:

"Sans doute, Musulmans, Juifs et Chrétiens ne croient-ils pas en Dieu de la même façon. Sans doute n'ont-ils pas la même manière de vénérer Dieu, de le prier, de le servir. Mais au fond, qui pourrait contester que c'est bien le même Dieu auquel s'adressent leurs prières?"

into:

"No doubt, Moslems, Jews and Christians do not believe in a God in the same way. Undoubtedly they do not have the same manner of venerating God, of praying to him, of serving him. But at the bottom, who could dispute that it is indeed the same God to which their prayers are addressed?"

is incorrect and misleading; it should read:

"No doubt, don't Moslems, Jews and Christians believe in God in the same way? No doubt, don't they have the same manner of venerating God, of praying to him, of serving him? Basically, who could argue that it is indeed the same God to whom they pray?"
