Atheism is not a panaceaReader comment on item: Palestinians Who Prefer Israel Submitted by Henry Davis - Australia (Australia), Jan 2, 2008 at 05:45 Dear Janusz, Peace can not be achieved unless there's an implicit recognition of individual rights, such as exist in western countries and Israel included.Religion is a personal matter and for that reason we have a separation of state and religion. Arab countries never med to that degree, and as far as I know the concept of secularism is foreign to them. On the other hand ,saying that Atheism could be the remedy contradicts history: I wouldn't call the Stalinist Russia as a peace loving state , nor South Korea, or Communist China. In case of those dictatorships the individual must serve the ideology, and in theocratic dictatorships the individual must live his life according to the sacred text. Either way he's screwed:he is not the owner of his life. I would agree that Atheism removes the obstacles to peace and happiness, because only reason can arrive at the difference between truth and falsehood , and this is the precondition of knowing the difference between good and evil.
