Estimates of National Intelligence: Not Very High

Armed with a piece of intelligence they agreed with, the national news media leaped at the chance to attack the Bush Administration for its Iranian policy. Clearly if the NIE had indicated that Iran continues to fund a covert nuclear weapons program, there would have been repeat accusations of intelligence manipulation made against the Administration, and renewed debates over the "disingenuous" origins of the Iraq War. CNN, MSNBC, etc. will not let this one go, and the next president will have to deal with the reality of Iranian nuclear ambition while stuck with the media-fueled public perception that Tehran is the new Tripoli.
