I am reminded of the story of Balaam in the book of Numbers. A King wanted to curse Israel because it was strong, and his kingdom was weak. He sent for Balaam. A delegation was sent. Balaam said no. A more prestigious delegation was sent. The answer was still no. Finally the most prestigious delegation was sent, and the rest of the story is there to be read in the book of Numbers. It starts off with lower level members of the hierarchy to issue warnings, and then to move progressively higher. Ultimately, as I surmise, it will take the Pope to be unequivocably clear. But, I wonder who will be truly paying attention to what he says.
