Saudi Arabia and Sufism?
Reader comment on item: Canberra Leads the Way, Vetoes Saudi Funds for Mosque

Submitted by Ramana Rajgopaul (India), Nov 27, 2007 at 05:18

Most of the problems of misunderstandings that take place about Islam is due to lack of knowledge and prejudice. Here is a classic example. "There has been concern internationally, not specifically to Australia, about some elements in Saudi Arabia which is the heartland of Wahhabism and Sufism ..."

Saudi Arabia in general and the Wahabis in particular have nothing to do with Sufism and abhor the latter. Sufism can not survive in Saudi Arabia.

If only Sufism flourishes in all of Islam, we would not have extremism, terrorism and all other negative isms associated with Islam.

Whatever the logic for the decision not to allow funding, people in responsible positions should at least get their facts right.

This event is dated January 2007. The government in Australia has changed and is expected to have a completely different take on Islam.

Incidentally, I am not a muslim, just a student of Islam.
