When I started reading your article about a 2 State solution now being essential to US interests ,I thought you were going to say this was the price Israel has to pay for continued US support inthe face of European opposition to Israel's defence -ie blame it all on the occupation attitude prevalent in Europe ,but you did not raise that as one of the possibilities for the Rice Stance .
Iran is sort of saying the same thing except that the Europeans have a very real interest to oppose Iran going nucleur ,whether they choose to see it or not and certainly Sarkozy in France sems to see it very clearly -as I think Brown does as well from the UK .The other reasons you present to me are not valid reasons at all and if that is the driving force I would seriously be advocating that one says Thank you but NO THANKS-there is no chance that with all the guarantees in the world (which anyhow will not be forthcoming )Abbas will be able to control the PA and all that ill happen is that West Bank as well as Gaza will become another terrorist state ,with potentially disastrous consequences not just toIsrael and its Army ,but the USA as well. If the US Foreign policy is being conducted on such an irrational basis ,over time the Americans will change their own minds .
