First of All, Sufi practices and beliefs were innovated 300 years after Islam came, which means that It is not from It, Nevertheless Islam does have spirituality which is a big part of it, as Iman "the second level of belief" conssits of 3 categories: beliefs and matters of the heart, saying by tongue and actions by limbs.
Secondly, Islam means submission to God, which mean the muslim submits himself to live every aspect of his life according to God's orders and follow his messenger's teachings, therefore Islam cannot be separated from society, but the Islamic society will live upon Islamic ruling, and this is obligatory in all circumstances.
I doubt the "secularizing Islam" project will ever produce any long run results. Muslims are and always will remain fundamentalists and loyal to their religion and faith
but nice try!
