Middle East Oil

It may be too obvious, but why don't we develop our own [local to the western hemisphere] fossil fuel resources? I know the greenies, tourist industry, and other NIMBY activist groups will scream bloody murder about potential ill effects imaginary 'accidents'. I think any temporary ill affects resulting from an 'environmental accident' pale in comparison to real damage to civilization(s) through continued support of radical Islamic regimens by paying them petro dollars. If we can quit buying their oil their economies will too limited to finance terrorists.
