This exchange was too limited to shed further light on Professor Khalidi's background. I can't comment on the specific charges Dr. Pipes makes, but I have heard enough of Professor Khalidi in other situations to know that he is a severe critic of Israel & its policies. I agree with Dr. Pipes that the core problem right now is defeating Hamas and ending the obscene suicide bombings. On the other hand, not everything Professor Khalidi said is off the wall. The Israeli military and intelligence establishment has for a long accepted the idea that Israel would probably give back the West Bank and Gaza to the Palestinians. Despite this, successive Israeli administrations have done nothing to halt the expansion of settlements. How can this contribute to a climate where a peaceful resolution of the conflict can occur?
