I do believe that it was the Persians that really invented islam (can you imagine Islam without the likes of Tabari or Zamakhshari or Sibawayhe?) and that the rule of the arabs in their own religion and civilization was marginal at best.

I also believe that what saved the culture and language of the people of Iran from the Arabs and their inferior culture was the great Firdawsi and his Shahnimah. And indeed old civilizations are not conjured away and if Iranians are the ones that invented islam the way we know it they will be the first people to abandon Islam.
