that is a myth created by some people ....they want to justify by their actions ....and tragically muslims leaders who ever done the past atrocities on their fellow muslims not completely follow the islam properly where quran said not to divide yourself. let me quote few verses on that

And hold fast, all together, by the rope which Allah (stretches out for you), and be not divided among yourselves; and remember with gratitude Allah's favor on you; for you were enemies and He joined your hearts in love, so that by His Grace, you became brethren; and you were on the brink of the pit of Fire, and He saved you from it. Thus do Allah make His Signs clear to you: That you may be guided. (Al-E-Imran, 103)

And obey Allah and His Messenger; and fall into no disputes, lest you lose heart and your power depart; and be patient and persevering:

Be not like those who are divided amongst themselves and fall into disputations after receiving Clear Signs: For them is a dreadful penalty,- (Al-E-Imran, 105)

For Allah is with those who patiently persevere: (Al-Anfal, 46)

But those who before them, had homes (in Medina) and had adopted the Faith,- show their affection to such as came to them for refuge, and entertain no desire in their hearts for things given to the (latter), but give them preference over themselves, even though poverty was their (own lot). And those saved from the covetousness of their own souls,- they are the ones that achieve prosperity. (Al-Hashr, 9)

Unbelievers are protectors, one of another: Unless you do this, (protect each other), there would be tumult and oppression on earth, anBe not like those who are divided amongst themselves and fall into disputations after receiving Clear Signs: For them is a dreadful penalty,- (Al-E-Imran, 105) d great mischief. (Al-Anfal, 73) so i must those who are doing thing didnt following islam properly where i strongly belief in that ....it is a just politics to achieve earthly levels........not spiritual through islam and caliph .................................
