Submitted by Zev Stern (United States), Aug 13, 2003 at 20:01 The following comment appeared in the New York Post on Aug. 12, 2003:Daniel Pipes' usually insightful commentary was uncharacteristically wide of the mark this time. He expresses anxiety over efforts to reduce the political role of Turkey's armed forces. In the United States, Israel and any democracy worthy of the name, the political role of the armed forces is zero. If we mean what we say about democracy, we must respect the right of Turkey's people to choose their own leaders, come what may.
